We are a group of citizens who want a strong and credible Europe that consistently defends human rights for everyone, equally.
This is why we launched a European Citizens’ Initiative calling on the EU to end its double standards and make sure no country is above human rights.
From 3 March 2026 we have 365 days to collect 1 million signatures.

What "Double Standards"?
Europeans care deeply about human rights. Human rights are also at the heart of the EU and international treaties.
But across the world today, countless lives are affected by human rights violations in countries the EU partners with. And when such violations occur, the EU does not respond equally. Some countries face strong consequences. Others do not.
Why do some countries receive exceptional treatment despite serious human rights violations? Unfair exceptions and the unequal treatment of countries and peoples erode citizens' trust in EU institutions, weaken the universal nature of human rights and undermine Europe’s credibility globally.
The EU must end these double standards.
No country is above human rights!
What we are proposing
We propose an EU regulation that establishes a binding human rights oversight and response mechanism. It will ensure that the European Commission monitors, evaluates, and responds to human rights violations by partner countries in a manner that is transparent, consistent, effective, proportionate and timely.
What we are proposing
An EU defending human rights for all
Our proposal will oblige the European Commission to act when people are affected by human rights violations – all human rights – anytime, anywhere, without exceptions, and proportionate to the violation. It is a lever to make human rights work.
A more accountable and transparent EU
A clear oversight and response mechanism will make EU institutions more accountable. An independent human rights observatory will improve Europeans’ access to information about human rights violations and how the EU responds. A complaint platform will allow EU citizens to voice their concerns about the (in)action of the EU to human rights violations.
Greater trust in institutions and democracy
Our proposal is about protecting European democracy and values. The proposed mechanism will enable political decisions to be guided by clear and consistent rules. When the same procedures are applied transparently to every country, citizens can be confident that human rights are defended fairly — without double standards and without exceptions.
A stronger Europe in the world
Moral and legal clarity in today’s world are no diplomatic burden, but a strength. This initiative will help Europe be a robust and reliable partner in a changing world.
